We are staying in a charming inn, the Charles Darwin. We were met at the airport by our American coordinator (Cathi). We were informed that the anticipated 50 participants had grown to 120 and may reach 200. People are traveling from all over the country to attend…some traveling by bus for 8 hours or more. We had hoped to create small groups (5-6 people) for the experiential portions of the training… So we are doing a lot of rethinking! Luckily we had brought large quantities of inexpensive toys…including materials for an experiential of how to make simple inexpensive toys for minimal costs.

Quito is over 9000 feet above sea level so are trying to counteract altitude sickness with lots of water and prescription medication. We will be taking it somewhat easy tomorrow as part of the adjustment, but we do need to meet with the host organization, gather material and go over the logistics at the auditorium.

We are both excited and a little daunted by the size of the audience

Workshops: Intensive Filial Therapy Training*-Oakland, California

*Co-sponsored by the Family Enhancement and Play Therapy Center

August 18th -August 21th, 2011 Thursday through Sunday
Includes 1 hr individual or group consult

Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor and Certified Filial Therapy Trainer

About the Workshop
Filial Therapy is a highly effective intervention integrating family therapy and play therapy to address child and family problems. Therapists learn how to train and supervise parents as they conduct special child-centered play sessions with their own children (ages3-12), an approach designed to resolve presenting problems while strengthening the family.

Filial Therapy has been used successfully with many child and family problems: oppositional behaviors, anxiety, depression, abuse/neglect, single parenting, traumatic events, attachment adoption/ foster care, relationship problems, divorce, family substance abuse, family reunification, chronic illness, and others. A research history spanning more than 40 years has consistently shown Filial Therapy to be cost-effective in facilitating positive and long-lasting child and family change. The use of this rela- tively short-term evidence-based approach has increased dramatically worldwide in recent years due to its effective, empowering approach to strengthening families.

Filial Therapy has been used in many settings & in both individual & group format. It has been embraced by many throughout the world because of its respectful involvement of parents as partners in the process of family change.

Prerequisite Training
The training works best if participants have prior training & supervised experience in Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) & a live introductory workshop or distance learning course in FT, such as the book Filial Therapy & the DVD workshop Intro to FT. Both are available at the Family Enhancement and Play Therapy on line store at the website www.play-therapy.com). Please attach a brief description of your experience. If you have questions about your own background, please call (510-923-0520) or e-mail Karen Pernet (keperent@yahoo.com).
