Wendy A. Caplin, Ph.D., RPT- S
"Therapy is a unique, shared journey
and the therapeutic relationship is essential for healing and
change."
I am a Licensed Psychologist and Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor
(RPT-S). I have a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Temple University
and extensive training in various therapeutic approaches and philosophies
for people of all ages. Since 1984, I have worked with adults, children
and families in a wide range of clinical settings. Currently, I am
in fulltime private practice which includes working with adults,
couples, families, children and providing supervision and training
to mental health clinicians.
Professional Training:
My professional training includes certificates/and or specialized training
in Gestalt Therapy for children and adults, Contextual Family Therapy, Child-Centered
Play Therapy, Filial Therapy, and Sandtray Therapy. Recently, I received
a Certificate in Adoption Therapy from Hunter College and became a Certified
Filial Therapy Trainer through the Family
Enhancement and Play Therapy Center.
Clinical Services:
I use an integrated treatment approach including talk, play, and sandtray therapies
and other creative techniques. In my work with children and families, I use
a special approach in which the parent becomes pivotal to the change process
by learning how to do "special play" time with their children.
My areas of specialty include, but are not limited to treatment of problems
of childhood, parent education, interpersonal problems, affective disorders,
women’s issues, gays and lesbians, chronic illness, physical and sexual
abuse, trauma and adoption/fostercare issues.
Training Services:
- Present workshops on a variety of topics related to children
and families
- Conduct trainings for clinicians in play therapy and sandtray
therapy and as a Certified Filial Therapist conduct Intensive Filial
Therapy training (co-sponsored by The Family Enhancement and Play
Therapy Center)
- Provide individual and group clinical supervision for mental
health professionals
Presentations:
I have presented at numerous conventions (American Psychology Association),
conferences (Association for Play Therapy International Conference, Gestalt
Institutes of Cleveland and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Psychological Association,
PA Association for Play Therapy), mental health agencies and hospitals on
various topics including play therapy, sandtray therapy, grieving children,
children in foster care, attachment problems, self-esteem, sandtray, and
Filial Therapy. Recently (2008), my colleague (Karen Pernet) presented a
day long workshop at the Association for Play Therapy International Conference
on our creative Filial Parenting Group Program based on Filial Therapy.* *My colleague Karen Pernet and I were consultants to
the Children’s Crisis Treatment Center, a children’s
mental health facility in Philadelphia, and developed and co-led
the Filial Parenting Group Program for child abuse prevention, funded
through the Philadelphia Department of Human Services. We are currently
working on a manual on the Filial Parenting Group Program.
